Our waste collection program has made it very simple to recycle and dispose of organic waste from the comfort of your own home. To keep it that way is crucial to understand what can go in your curbside carts and what can't.
Be warned that the City is taking this matter seriously—we’re inspecting all carts and tagging those who are disposing waste incorrectly. Thankfully, after reading this, you’ll be a disposal hero that keeps your cart free from the tag and a $500 fine!
Sorting 4 the Future Game
So what better way to learn than playing a game! Sorting 4 The Future takes you through five levels; your mission: to match the type of waste with the correct waste cart: recycling, garbage, compost, etc. Make the right choices, and you get a new item for your virtual park. You can even print a personalized certificate after the game is over!
Now let’s break it down…
♻️ Recyclable Items:
We’ll start with the brilliant blue cart because it is the most crucial. And it’s the cart where things usually go awry. One-third of what is put in the blue cart doesn’t belong there!
These items can go in your recycling cart, as long as they're clean and dry.
Paper: Paper, newspapers, and magazines are good to recycle. If the paper is soiled or wet, compost it.
Flattened Cardboard & Paperboard: Flatten and recycle all cardboard and paperboard. Cardboard pizza delivery boxes without leftovers or liners should be recycled; but leftover crusts, cheese, and other food should not.
Plastic Bottles & Containers #1-5 and #7: Clean and dry containers, then put the cap back on before tossing it in the cart.
Food & Beverage Cans: Recycle empty aluminum and steel cans. Empty aerosol cans are also recyclable. If the can has a plastic lid, remove it before recycling.
Glass Bottles & Containers: Food and beverage containers. Broken glass should be wrapped or sealed in a container or bag and placed in the garbage cart

Aerosol cans are not to be put in the recycling cart but can be dropped off at 456 Jefferson St, Morden to be recycled as part of product care.
🍎 Compostable items:
Food scraps like apple cores, eggshells or expired leftovers belong in your Green Cart.
It sometimes helps to think about what sort of waste could help a garden grow. Be sure to line your under-the-counter green bin with a compostable bag.
Old Food: Meat, bones and meat products - raw or cooked, whole poultry carcass, eggs and eggshells, coffee grounds and paper filters, tea bags, food crumbs, pasta, rice crackers, cereal, bread, pretzels, chips, flour, beer, wine, juice, milk, herbs and spices, mouldy cheese or spoiled foods, ice cream, paper muffin cups, old condiments or canned food removed from the container, nutshells (except walnut shells), any vegetable/fruit and pits, old food.
Party Items & Decor: Certified compostable cups and utensils, wrapping paper rolls, paper table cloths, excelsior, crepe paper streamers, certified compostable plastic bags, raffia.
Kitchen Items: Greasy pizza boxes ripped into smaller pieces, wet or soiled paper and cardboard (except chemicals), used paper napkins, used paper towel and cardboard rolls, paper bags, wax-coated beverage cups, natural wine corks, paper egg cartons, toothpicks, bamboo skewers, used paper plates without a glossy coating.
Plants & Organics: Leaves trimmed from plants, dead plants, old soil, old floral arrangements, natural potpourri, jack o' lanterns, small hay bales used in decor, natural holiday wreaths, real evergreen garlands, garden refuse, grass clippings, tree leaves.
Around the House Items: Dryer lint, 100% cotton clothing (cut into smaller pieces), 100% wool clothing (cut into smaller pieces), paper bills and other paper documents, shredded paper, envelopes (except the plastic window), pencil shavings, note pads, business cards without a glossy coat, paper receipts, subscription card magazines.
Baby & Personal Care Items: Used facial tissues, any hair, toilet paper rolls, old loofahs (not plastic) or natural sea sponges, nail clippings, 100% cotton pads and cotton balls, cotton swabs (except plastic sticks), compostable face wipes, compostable baby wipes, compostable diapers and compostable feminine hygiene products.
Pet Items: Per fur, pet droppings, cat litter (except silica crystals), paper pet bedding from cages, feathers, alfalfa hay or pellets, rawhide dog chews, fish food, dry or wet pet food.
⛔️ Never place any glass, metal, chemicals, or plastic into the compost cart.
🗑 Garbage Items:
Think of the bold black cart as the black hole. A place for all the other ‘stuff.’ The black cart is a free-for-all for all the candy wrappers, drink pouches, broken mugs and black plastics to mingle.

SOLID WASTE TIPS

Christmas Trees are to be deposited at the compost site located on Wilcocks Road or placed at your curbside by the stated date for pickup during the Christmas Tree Recycling Week.
You are responsible to have larger items taken to the SWAMP landfill site or contact Pembina Valley Containers or MWM Environmental to arrange for disposal at your cost.
WILLCOCKS ROAD COMPOST YARD
The compost site located on Willcocks Road is not associated with the curbside compost system. This site is accessible to Morden residents for free to collect wood chips and compost, or dispose of:
Yard refuse (leaves, grass, garden plants, branches, etc.)
Christmas trees
Never put rocks, concrete, or hazardous materials in the compost yard or the green compost cart.
