City of Morden Addresses Odour and Taste Concerns in Water Supply

The City of Morden wishes to address recent concerns from residents regarding an unusual odour and taste in the water supply. We understand that this situation has caused discomfort and inconvenience, and we want to provide clarity on the matter, and the steps being taken to resolve the issue.

The current odour and unpleasant taste in the water are due to seasonal changes in temperature and algae blooms in Lake Minnewasta, this can cause the water to have an earthy or musty smell and taste.  At this time there is no cause for concern that the water is unsafe to drink as the water is tested regularly and meets the Drinking Water Quality Standards Regulation of the Office of Drinking Water.

Our Water Treatment Plant is equipped to handle a wide range of water quality issues, and our team is working diligently to address the problem. We have already implemented additional treatment processes to mitigate the odour and taste. Residents should start noticing an improvement in water taste and odour over time as these efforts take effect. We understand the importance of clean potable water and are committed to continue to work towards a solution.

The City of Morden with the assistance of the Manitoba Water Services Board has issued tenders for the construction of the new standpipe which will include an air stripping system to reduce THM levels in the water and also help reduce odours in the water. The City of Morden has also awarded the work for an Ultrasonic Algae Control system at the lake. Unfortunately, the installation could not happen this fall due to a delay in regulatory clearances, but it will be installed in early spring 2025.

We appreciate the community's patience and understanding as we work to ensure the highest quality water for all residents.
